Offering Bread

By: Maura H. Harrison

The father’s work provides. The pantry’s filled—
sugar and salt, fresh eggs and flour, the gild
of gospel parable, variety
of love’s ingredients, rich family.

The hungry child complains that there is nothing—
Nothing at all to eat. He pouts, and huffing,
Closes the pantry door and walks away,
Small pilgrim seeking finished feast and play.

Comes Mother and her recipes—her sifting,
Kneading and proofing—folding cares, uplifting
Her prayers, and tasting psalms—she sets the table,
Offering bread, and grace, and all she’s able.
